United States and Russia: Nuclear War?

In today's meeting, each country presented their resolutions to one and other as we are moving forward to settling on an agreement.  It became clear as to which countries are serious about putting a stop to the violence.  Russia talked about their deal with the following countries: United States, France, Pakistan, United Kingdom, and China.  They feel that the root of the problem has to do with the president of Syria, Bashar Al-Assad.  The countries will use all their power in getting him to step down.  Russia expressed their want for Assad to seek asylum in Tunisa.  Although this would spare Assad, it would also save thousands of people with him no longer in power.  As the meeting moved forward, Russia brought up one of their main concerns.  This anxiety has to do with the United States and their placement of the missile defense system in Poland.  Vladimir Putin simply states his feeling about the arrangement, "it simply makes me and my people uncomfortable".  He will go to all extremes if the weapons are not removed immediately.  By saying extremes, this means a nuclear war.  He will not hesitant for a second to keep his people safe, if the United States does not abide in taking out the missile defense system from Eastern Europe.  In return, Russia has agreed to reduce their weapon supply to Iran by 55% and in addition, will support the plan of having the United Nations look at nuclear facilities.  He urges that in no way does he like to be a threat, but will do anything to protect his people.  When asked why the countries are on the brink of a nuclear war, it was said that the United States has only removed the most recent defense system from France and Romania.  There are still others out there that could potentially cause harm and violence to the people.  At first this seemed to put all on edge, but because they were overly thrilled about a resolution, the possibility of a nuclear war ended up basically being denied by each of the countries.

United Nation's Debate Day 1

After listening in on the first United Nation's meeting today, it seems as if there are numerous conflicts between the countries.  Discussion of how to handle the Syrian refugees that roam throughout brought lots of anger and panic for all the countries.  Turkey expressed their strong stance of not being inclined to take in the refugees purely because this will do no good in solving the issue.  Understandably, they do not want the refugees to rely on Turkey as a place to live when this is Syria's responsibility.  On the other hand, France has agreed to step in and temporarily house some of these refugees.  In exchange they ask for one simple thing due to the economic crisis their country is currently going through..."I would like Turkey to pay for all expenses of the refugees coming to France and also whatever money that was put into these camps previously to be given the republic of France".  Siding back with Turkey, both the United States and the United Kingdom are extremely opposed to the idea of the Syrian regime.  It is out of the question for either of the countries to take in these refugees, but they also do not feel it is appropriate to send them back to Syria where they will be faced with "the brutal actions of the Syrian government".  President Bashar Al-Assad from Syria has made himself clear that if these refugees step foot back into Syria, they will be dead.  The United States and the United Kingdom did not bring up any possible solutions but are in disagreement with both Turkey and Syria.  Because of their refusal to get involved, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from Iran became quite angry.  He conveyed very strongly that they especially should offer the refugees housing because of their stable economic background.  Additionally, Israel has agreed to take in some refugees but feel the bigger problem is the extreme amounts of violence in Syria.  As the debate continues, we are hoping an agreement will be reached between the countries.  Right now it seems as if everyone is praying Syria will step up to the plate and finally take care of their responsibilities.

Relationship Between Iraq/United States/United Kingdom

The relationship between these countries is for the most part, very shaky.  The army of the United States has many times invaded Iraq causing lots of chaos.  They all have many times risked their lives in order to spy on the troops of Iraq in order to find out upcoming attacks on our country.  In March of 2003, the United States invaded Iraq in hopes of finding out information about Saddam Hussein.  Although they were unsuccessful, many people were killed during this process.  History shows that the United Kingdom and Iraq used to have an unstable relationship as well, but recently it has improved.  During November of 2010, they agreed to become allies so that they could help each other out with certain resources.  Unlike the United Kingdom and Iraq, the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom happens to be the exact opposite.  Because the economic and military power of the United Kingdom is slowly diminishing, the United States is not as interested in remaining allies.  Although this relationship is misleading, the “special relationship” between them is coming to a close.  To sum it up, these countries do not by all means have any close relationship.

Military Questions

  • Which countries have the biggest, most technologically advanced armies?
Overall, The United States has the most advanced army.  They have the most powerful defense weapons and are backed up by a strong economy.  The members are well trained and aggressive.  Each keep a low profile which enables them to have more successful attacks.  Russia then comes right behind the United States with the second best army.  Violence is their biggest tool as a military.  They achieve their goals easily by using this violence and refuse to back down.   Lastly, China has the third most powerful army.  Recently, the government of China has been expanding their army and improving it vastly.  A great amount of money has been spent to build aircraft carriers.  No other country at the moment contains this device which puts China’s arm at a much greater advantage.

  • Which countries are nuclear powers?
The following countries are nuclear powers: China, France, Russia, The United Kingdom, and the United States.

  • Which countries are the most vulnerable militarily?
The countries that happen to be the most vulnerable militarily are India and Turkey.  For India, the politicians are not inclined to help the army.  They refuse to stand by their military and give support which puts them at a major disadvantage.  Additionally, the military in Turkey is not supported by a strong economy.  They do not have any weapons or money available.  Without powerful weapons that most the other countries have, a strong fight is not possible.

  • What wars have been fought amongst the countries, directly/indirectly?
World War I--> England, Russia, and France vs. Austria, Germany, and Italy (1914-1918)
World War II--> United States vs. Japan (1939-1945)
Vietnam War--> United States vs. Vietnam (1955-1975)
War on Terrorism--> United States vs. Afghanistan and Iraq (present)
Kargil War--> India vs. Pakistan (1999)
Iraq War--> United States and United Kingdom vs. Iraq (2003-2009)
The Greek Civil War--> Greeks vs. United Kingdom and United States (1946-1949)
